The equipment which you will need for any particular highpoint varies not only from highpoint to highpoint, but varies on which way you attempt to summit. Mount Washington, New Hampshire is a prime example. You can drive up Mount Washington or take a ride up on the cog railroad. Both of these approaches only require minimal equipment, if any. Mount Washington can also be approached as a day hike or a multi-day hike.
