Directions from Interstate 95
Take Exit 244 from Interstate 95. This is the Millinocket , Maine exit. Take Route 11 West to the town of Millinocket. Once in the town, Route 11 will turn South on Penobscot Avenue. Continue straight through the intersection and follow the signs to Baxter State Park. You will veer to the right after one block, and then you wil take a hard right onto Bates Street. Bates Street becomes Millinocket Road. After about 8.5 miles, you will pass by a dam on the left and a general store on the right. (The general store has some good sandwiches and loads of Baxter Park, Katahdin, and Maine souvenirs.) At this point, the road becomes Baxter Park Road. From the junction of Route 11 and Penobscot Avenue in Millinocket until the Togue Pond gate is about 17.25 miles. There are rather strict rules and limits to the number of people allowed in Baxter State Park. The Baxter State Park site is a good place to start to check out the rules and restrictions. Once at the Togue Pond gate, you'll have to make a decision which trail you will use to the summit.
If you are going to Roaring Brook campground to start your hike, turn right and go about 8 miles to the parking lot. Abol Trail begins 5.4 miles up the road to the left. The Appalachian Trial begins about 7.5 miles on this same road.
